The first three BU students, who have completed their St. John Ambulance AMFR training. Left to right: Kaytey Martin, Janet Lee and Kyla Woodson, Advanced Medical First Responders. Christine Kaskiw said these women are “keen, energetic and excited about how this is assisting their career choice and desire to give back to the community.”

Students from Brandon University teamed up with St. John Ambulance and launched the first Advanced Medical First Responder (AMFR) First Aid Group in a Manitoban University. The group will be meeting on campus weekly to train and practice various First Aid and CPR skills. The First Aid group was formed to help meet the increasing need for AMFR's at events on campus and throughout Western Manitoba.

St. John Ambulance AMFR's were present at 523 events in 2009. Their dedication helps to increase the quality of life for people in the community. Last year, St. John Ambulance volunteered 33,000 hours of community service across Manitoba. They were present at Royal Winter and Summer Fairs, Wheat King Games; they helped with the Manitoba flood relief and brought their Therapy Dogs to the H1N1 clinics.

Registration for the First Aid volunteers (Age 16 and up) will be accepted on any Monday evening. Meetings are also held at the St. John Ambulance Training and Community Services Centre in the Shoppers Mall Business Centre. Meetings start at 7:00 PM.
