Shortly after Brandon was incorporated in 1882 a small community of Icelanders was formed. In 1892 there were 130 members in the Icelandic community in Brandon. Several were employed at the John Hambury mill. In 1891 a Lutheran church was built. By the turn of the century the community began to lose members and in one year 108 people left Brandon for BC.
Icelanders have been a part of Brandon's history from its earliest days and continue to play an active part in today’s Brandon.
In 1966, a group of people of Icelandic descent met to plan a project for Canada's Centennial. They continued to meet on an ad hoc basis until 1974 when the Icelandic Canadian Club of Western Manitoba was formed. In 1981 the club approved a constitution and became a member of the Icelandic National League. Each year we have a spring supper called Thorrablot. Several traditional Icelandic dishes are on the menu as well, of course, those tasty Icelandic desserts.
After hosting an Icelandic pavilion at each winter festival in the past it was decided to give our members and volunteers a rest so we did not take part in the 2010 festival. However, we still wanted to let everyone know that Icelanders are still part of the community so we decided to share what Icelanders like best, a good old fish fry.
A pickerel supper will be held on March 19th at Trinity United Church 1515-6th St. There will be 5:30 & 6:30 seatings. The cost is $15 per person. For tickets call 727-8781 or 727-1204.
