Story:
Looking outside at the winter wonderland and feeling the icy shiver that goes along with that dreaded “wind chill,” it is hard to believe that some people are already preparing for the upcoming spring planting season. For those who are serious about spring and gardening they are already anticipating what they are going to grow this year and yearning to get that first seed in the ground.
In celebration of the upcoming season the organizers of the community gardens here in Brandon are having a Seedy Sunday. If you are looking for an original way to spend Valentine’s Day or a special gift this may be the answer for you. From noon until 6 p.m. there will be a meeting of the green thumbs at the West End Community Centre. From the words of organizer Blake Hamilton, “this is a meeting of gardeners, seed savers, horticulturalist, and people interested in food and heritage.” Hamilton is welcoming everyone to bring in planting seeds which they want to give away or trade. There will also be seeds for sale. Admission to this portion of the event is free.
From 5 p.m. until 6 p.m. there will be an open discussion on the community gardens in Brandon. What we can do to help and encourage the use of the facilities as well as an opportunity to exchange ideas, views, visions, and share experiences. As the discussion comes to a close everyone will be able to smell the delicious organic bison chili cooking for dinner. It is $6 for a hearty meal which will take place at 6 p.m. If you are truly looking for a unique, economical, and worthy way to celebrate Valentine’s Day, this is the answer.
As dinner comes to a close, the night festivities get even better with a social to commemorate Valentine’s Day, Louis Riel Day, and the entrance into the Chinese year of the Tiger. Brandon’s Good Vibe Tribe an infusion of a multitude of talented Westman area DJs, dancers, and hip shakers will be providing the evening’s entertainment. The social is the main fundraiser for the community gardens and will take place at the West End Community Centre from 7 p.m. until 1a.m. Tickets are $10 and are available only at Senate Skate Shop or the Marquis Project. No tickets will be sold at the door. As this is a licensed event, only those 18 years of age or older can attend the social portion and ID will be required. So if you are celebrating with a special someone, good friends, family, or just on your own, this social is the place to be. With a Monday morning free to sleep in there is no excuse to miss the Seedy Sunday Night Dance Party!
