The Cast-Off Relatives will be rocking out Parthenon Pizza Friday evening. This young band is relatively new to the Brandon music scene having played a few shows under their former name 41 Marquis. One of those shows just happened to be the Canada Day celebrations down at the Riverbank Discovery Centre, a pretty big shindig for such a new group. The Cast-Off Relatives consist of Kurtis Gibson on vocals and guitar, Mike Bright on bass and vocals, and Cody Williamson keeping the beat on drums. The guys have been playing together as a three piece band since January of 2009. With less than a year under their belt their song catalog is already at an impressive number. A combination of originals and covers they have certainly been working on their craft.
The guys in The Cast-Off Relatives are not only young as a group but also in age. They are all still in high school and yet are already recording material and getting their music out to the masses. Thanks to sites like Myspace and Facebook in combination with the local shows that they have performed, The Cast-Off Relatives are collecting a pretty loyal following. Their sound is a little raw at this stage in the game for me but I can certainly see the potential in the group. As well any band who writes their own material straight up gets support from me. The group shows influences of many styles in their sound ranging from rock, punk, funk, reggae, and even with some blues and folk added to the mix. I can imagine that they will find their own individual groove over time, they defiantly have a great start and as they are so young they certainly have time to work out their sound. The maturity in the group's musicianship is pretty impressive and when you take into consideration they haven't even reached grade 12 yet it's enough to make you stop and take notice. Thanks to shows like Faderfest, The Cast Off Relatives have also had a chance to mix with established local bands such as Left of Center, 18 Rabbit, Steppin' on Mars, and Effect and Cause. Having the support of the other local musicians in Brandon is key as it is usually the other groups going out to support one another on the band circuit.
The Cast-Off Relatives are embarking on a new chapter, with a fresh name change and an assortment of new tunes the show on Friday is sure to be pure entertainment. I believe that they are a group to keep an eye and an ear. They are talented, young, and eager an excellent combination and I for one am positive that The Cast-Off Relatives will be a name we will hear a lot of in the future. Friday's show is at Parthenon Pizza, 555 34th Street, beginning at 10 pm and going until 1 am.
