I’m beginning to think the old adage “with age comes wisdom” is true for the most part. For 26 years of my life, learning on the go for me has been the specialty. The problem that I have is learning about things that I’m not necessarily interested in. Not a day goes by that I don’t find out something new and interesting while browsing TSN.ca, but if you ever were to see me watching the History Channel during my free time, you might as well document it because it’s history in the making.
You see what I’ve come to realize is being a sports nut has its perks. I’ve noticed that I’m able to have intellectual football conversations with fellow pigskin fans and can talk hockey, continually trying to answer the question: Why do the Toronto Maple Leafs stink?
I appreciate the challenge I was presented with when I began at the Journal a little less than three years ago. That challenge? Being able to not only do features on Wheat Kings or stories on someone making a difference in the local sports scene, but to also do news pieces.
I’ve relished the opportunity to expand my mind so to speak and branch out. Journal Editor Bruce Penton usually takes care of most of the news material each week but does test me every once in a while with something news worthy. Hopefully those of you who do read my news stories on a week-to-week basis enjoy what is put in front of you.

Speaking of sports and football (what a shocker eh?), I wonder what Brandon product Israel Idonije of the National Football League’s Chicago Bears is thinking these days? So far this season, his quarterback is not looking the part of a Pro-Bowl QB and is leading the league in interceptions (as of Nov. 13). He had five on Thursday night against San Francisco. Not the kind of statistics Bears fans were expecting when the team traded two first-round draft picks for Cutler during the off-season. After going 3-1 to start the season, the Bears are now 4-5 through nine games.

It sure has been exciting times around here lately. The Journal continues to grow and the future looks promising (make sure to check out Penton’s story on our continued growth this week). It’s a bit surreal to think that this weekly news publication will now make its way to various towns throughout southwestern Manitoba. It just goes to show the dedication and hard work and people who want nothing more than for this paper to be the best publication in Western Manitoba.
