Letter to the editor

Dear editor:

Manitoba Hydro is currently holding open houses for its next major transmission project, Bipole III. These open houses are being billed as an opportunity for the public to provide input and ask questions about the project.

However, these open houses aren't about getting feedback. They are an expensive tool the NDP is using to rationalize a west side transmission route. Instead of pursuing the much shorter, less expensive and more reliable east side route, the NDP has forced Manitoba Hydro to run Bipole III down the west side of the province against the recommendations of experts, engineers and even Hydro itself.

An east side line would be 400 kilometres shorter, and $640 million less expensive. A west side route will result in the loss of valuable electricity, and the opportunity to offset 350,400 tonnes of GHG emissions. The total dollar savings of an east side line would be more than double the savings achieved through Power Smart since 1989.

I encourage you to look at the big picture and decide if this is the best use of your money.

Cliff Cullen

Progressive Conservative Manitoba Hydro
